In August 2013, the Egyptian photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid, better known as Shawkan, filmed the violent dispersal of a demonstration by the police in Cairo. This brutality cost the lives of hundreds of people. Shawkan was arrested. Since then he has been detained on fabricated charges such as 'homicide' and 'membership of a criminal gang', and is liable to be sentenced to death. He has also been punched, beaten and flogged with a belt.
Amnesty International Flanders demands the immediate and unconditional release of Shawkan. Amnesty therefore started a signature campaign during the Mooov world film festival.
With the aid of Gonzales, Serviceplan has come up with a campaign reflecting the atmosphere of the film and anticipating Shawkan’s release date: which remains unknown. The campaign consists of a cinema spot, an advertisement and a stand to be placed at 6 locations in the film festival. There is also online promotion.
